The Ocean Shore Railroad mural at the Crespi Mini Storage Center in Pacifica, created by the Pacifica Historical Society, is a vibrant tribute to a pivotal chapter in the city’s past. Spanning 72 ft long and 12 ft high, the mural vividly brings to life the history of the Ocean Shore Railroad, which operated from 1905 to 1920 and connected San Francisco to the emerging seaside communities of San Mateo County. Though the railroad never reached its planned destination of Santa Cruz, it played a key role in shaping Pacifica’s early development, encouraging tourism and settlement along the stunning coast.
This mural is not only a celebration of local history but also a testament to community spirit. It was made possible through the tireless efforts of Pacifica Historical Society volunteers, who contributed in countless ways—from donating art supplies and homemade baked goods to offering financial support. Notably, proceeds from the Society’s popular rummage sale helped fund the ongoing restoration of the historic Ocean Shore Railroad railcar, tying together efforts to preserve both artistic and mechanical aspects of this legacy.
Together, these contributions have brought the mural to life, capturing the challenges and triumphs of the Ocean Shore Railroad and honoring the people, past and present, who have helped preserve Pacifica’s unique story.
We honor Steve Phillips for envisioning and championing this stunning mural, whose rich portrayal of early‑20th‑century Pacifica—complete with its historic coastal railroad, local artichoke fields, and seaside leisure—captures the spirit and story of our community. His collaboration with the Pacifica Historical Society and his initiative in bringing this artwork to fruition are deeply appreciated.
This stunning mural is the work of two talented local artists, David Alonzo and Anthony Taganap, whose shared vision and artistic mastery have brought a vibrant piece of history to life. Through their combined talent, they’ve transformed a blank wall into a living narrative—a visual journey through time that honors the past and inspires the future.
We extend our sincere gratitude to the owners of Crespi Mini Storage in Pacifica for their invaluable support and generous contributions that made this mural a reality.
