Spanish Period

This famous painting memorializes the November 4, 1769 "discovery" of the San Francisco Bay by Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portola' as it was imagined by reknowned painter Mort Künstler. The mountaintop, now known as Sweeney Ridge, is south of San Francisco and sits within Pacific's city limits (from the original painting by  Mort Künstler, Portola' Discovers San Francisco Bay  © 1970, Mort Künstler, Inc.)
