Phil Valdez Jr., MBA, a former Professor of Financial Management, is an 8th generation descendent of Juan Bautista Valdez, soldado de cuera, on the 1769 Portola Expediton and courier on the 1774 Juan Bautista de Anza Exploratory Expedition to California. Phil's ancestor brought Anza's original orders, from Mexico City to el Presidio de San Ignacio de Tubac, now in Arizona, and accompanies the expediton as courier to Mission San Gabriel, becoming the first man in recorded history to make the round trip on horse back between Mexico City and San Gabriel, Alta California. Considered an expert on the topography of the routes of both Anza expeditons to California, he has authored the Anza Letters, relative to the feud between Lt. Colonel Juan Bautista de Anza and Captain/Governor Fernando de Rivera y Moncada and numerous other articles. His presentation will cover Anza's subsequent expediton around the East Bay, to see if in fact ther was a Rio Grande de San Francisco.

Dr. Semones latestest book, "Hard Luck Coast: The Perilous Reefs of Point Montara," is the second of a trilogy she is writing about shipwrecks at lighthouses along the centeral California coast. According to Sea Classics magazine, she is a "master storyteller, with great authority, pathos and skill".
